Prior to graduating from college with a BA in technical theatre and art, Deborah attended the Art Student’s League of New York where she studied painting and anatomy. After working several years, she studied at the Art Institute of Boston where she focused on graphic design and advertising.
Ever interested in exploring creative media, she took workshops with Denise Fiedler of Paste and discovered the rewarding art process of paper collage. The word “collage” derives from the French word “coller” which means “to glue.” Collage involves painting, design, working with color and textural contrasts and simplifying complex shapes into a new form. Deborah works with book pages including poetry, non-fiction and fiction which she sometimes paints and sometimes simply uses the typography to create shadow and depth.
As she says, “I paint pages of poetry and text as well as plain paper to build a color palette to create my collages. Lines of text add tonal color and help to create shadow effects. Often I’ll slip in a word or two or a line of text for interest. Perhaps you’ll discover some as you look through my pieces.”
Take a close look and enjoy them!
Deborah’s work has been shown at the Gallery in Readfield, ME; Fuller Craft Museum, MA; and here at the Green Lion.
