Jay Stormer has been drawing and painting from a very early age. His first printmaking was at Dartmouth College in graphic arts courses with Professor Ray Nash nearly sixty years ago. Woodcuts and wood engraving were his primary focus, but he also studied etching and drypoint, some book design, and typography.
A college major in earth science led to a career as a university professor of mineralogy and geochemistry. However, as time permitted, he continued printmaking, along with drawing and watercolor painting.
In recent years he has taken individual instruction in advanced etching and aquatint at the Art Print Residence in Catalunya. Presently, he is located in Brunswick, ME, with a studio and press now on-line at RedstartPress.com.
Nature, particularly birding, is a special interest that inspires many of the prints. Photography and working with images has always been part of Jay's scientific work as well as his art. Personal photographs are often used as a reference for the prints.
Jay’s recent exhibitions include a solo show, “Birds of Maine”, at the Maine Audubon Visitors Center in Falmouth, ME (Feb - Mar 2020). Several prints have also been accepted in the International Mini Print Cantabria II (2019) & III (2020) exhibitions at the Faro Cabo Mayor Art Center, in Santander, Spain.
